Any roofing business owner understands the importance of having a set of highly skilled roofers. The difficulty with this and any construction job is two fold. First, employee turnover is often too high and keeping skilled employees on staff is difficult. Two, industry regulations and safety requirements change so often its difficult to keep your team up to date with all of the certifications and requirements.

There are a number of ways though that you can keep your crew of roofers where they need to be by offering a robust training program for your roofers.

Hands On Training

There is no doubt that Hands-On-Training for jobs like Roofing is a requirement. The way you go about instructing new crew members needs to be thorough and done properly. Before you bring them up start working on a job they should shadow your best workers for at least a few days. Have them see what they’re doing, what problems they face, and how they overcome those.

Once a new roofer is comfortable with the work and understand what makes a great roofer great, have them do some work but this time have your best workers shadow them. The length of time that they shadow a new roofer can vary based on how well they perform, but it’s important to allow your best roofers the opportunity to share their insight and knowledge with those just starting out.

Safety Training

Before sending any roofer up on top of a build be sure that they are properly trained with safety measures. In some states this may require passing safety tests. It is often recommended to owners of roofing companies to have a safety exame that they require their team to use.

The one difficulty with safety training is that it can quickly become expensive to put together a safety course each year and then take time away from a job site to have your team go through the training. Luckily business owners have another option for training their roofers. This includes creating and leveraging an online course through a elearning solutions provider.

Creating an online course would allow your crew to take their training while at home, away from the job, and not require them to miss any labor hours on a project. We’d highly recommend investing the time with an organization that can help you quickly and easily create a safety course that you can run current and new employees through to meet your states minimum safety review requirements.

One of the most important aspects of landing any job is based on how well you perform your interview with the hiring manager. This is no different for landing a roofing job. When you’re preparing for an interview its best to practice with a friend or family member that can ask you questions you haven’t thought of. By doing this you’ll be more on your toes and get use to answering questions that you haven’t thought of.

Some questions you may here during an interview for a roofing job may be:

Which is your favorite tool to use when on the roof?

What are the safety procedures you think are most important before starting a roofing job?

How important is it to be on time to a project each day?

How long do you think it should take to finish a roof on a traditional home?

Preparing With Your Resume

One of the best ways to prepare for an interview for a roofing job is through studying your own resume. Your resume is often the only thing the hiring manager has to tell you about them. They’ll often ask questions about work you describe in your resume. Thus, if you haven’t already, its a good idea to check your resume before applying job. Put the document through a tool that offers a grammar check services to ensure you haven’t missed any typos or mistakes that would push your potential manager to not consider you for an interview.

Be sure to bring your resume with you to your interview. Often you’ll speak with multiple people during an interview and the best way for them to quickly get a sense of your skill set is by reviewing your resume. If you have them with you you’ll be ready to provide it to them as you talk about your experience and skill set.

By preparing this way you’ll perform great during your interview and be a lock for your next roofing job.

A Roofing Field Operations Manager is needed in Charleston, SC. The position requires 10 to 15 years of roofing experience and will be working with a larger roofing company. The work requires relocation to the area which suggest it will be long term employment.

The hiring company is the 3rd largest roofing company in the country and believes they have a steady level of residential and commercial roofing jobs that need to be completed.

Job Benefits

The Job posting nor the company website lists much information about benefits that are available to employees. These types of questions should be the first thing discussed with the hiring manager to ensure you understand what benefits are available to you.

The listing did mention Bonuses so that is a benefit you should expect. Be sure to find the details about what is included in each Bonus.

Our Recommendation

If you’re living in the Charleston South Carolina area and have significant roofing experience, this Job maybe for you. This position sounds like lot of management work and not as much hands on duties. Be expected to be able to communicate with other company leadership as well as keep documents up to date as this is typical for management work with larger contracting companies.

The fact that you’ll still be in the field means you will also be getting your hands dirty. I imagine less time on actual roofs and more supervising the type of work done by your crew.

Original Job Description

The original job listing was published at Baker Roofing and was posted on the 5th of May 2011. Head over to their site to find out more.

In these financial times, we want to make sure that our jobs are sufficient enough to pay for our bills and still leave enough for vacation trips and luxury indulgences. If you are planning to get into the roofing industry, you want to be sure that the pay is enough for you to establish a career and make a living out of it. Read on to find more about the roofing business and if this job will be right for you.

How much will a roofing professional earn in this industry? While the salary brackets, benefits and compensation may vary depending on the company and the type of work, roofers are typically paid by the hour until the contract is completed. Since this is a hard labor job, you can expect to be paid as low as $12 to as high as $20-$25 an hour.

There is a huge possibility that you will start as a roofing apprentice once you are hired. This entails very specific and hands-on learning. The only way for you to become an experienced roofer is through practical knowledge, and you will be able to do that with the help of skilled professionals who have spent years in this type of business. There are also specific certification and licensing exams that others go through to ensure that they have the proper credentials and have what it takes to succeed. With the demand for construction and the real estate industry, there is a huge need for laborers, whether this would be for residential, industrial or commercial demands. As your career starts to progress and you become more skilled in your role, you can move up as a roofing supervisor, an estimator or even a construction manager. Try to read up on CEOs and owners of major construction companies and you will be surprised to find that some of them have started on the job as a roofing apprentice.

Someone who is hired to install, repair or perform maintenance work on your roof is typically called a roofer. These professionals are the ones responsible for handling roofing jobs for any residential or commercial type establishment. While other people have resorted to perform do it yourself jobs on their homes, other tasks may seem too dirty or dangerous for an average person. They run the risk of several occupational hazards such as being in high areas or getting burned because of the heated materials used to fix your roofing.

Being a professional roofer takes more than just physical skills. It goes without saying that one needs to ensure that they are able to pass all medical exams that will determine whether they could work under physically strenuous conditions or other tasks that will require strength and endurance. If you are interested to get into the roofing industry, but are unsure about how to prepare yourself for the role, read on to find out how you can be trained to make the roofing job a lot easier for you.

As with any other type of job, a newly hired roofer needs to undergo specific instructional or practical training before they go on the field. While most of the roofers in the past would learn through on the job training or practical experience, a lot of professional roofing companies today are offering internship training that will allow you to watch the experts before you actually start working. It is important that you understand the different types of materials used, the tips and tricks, and best practices from those experienced roofing professionals. You would certainly benefit a lot from watching the experts perform roofing jobs, but there is no greater venue to learn than through practical application. Make the most out of training and do not be afraid to ask questions. This is the only way to make yourself a successful roofer in the very near future!

So you want to get into the business of roofing. This industry has become a lot more than just simple repair or maintenance work for most laborers. Today, with the competition becoming a lot fiercer than ever before, a roofer needs to make sure that they are able to set themselves apart from the rest of the other professional companies that do the same type of business. This type of work is hard labor and will require a lot of time and effort from your end. Whether it will be for a residential home or a four story commercial establishment, you need to make sure that you are amenable to the working conditions that form part of your roofing job. Read on to find out if this can really be the job for you.

To say that the working conditions for a typical roofer would be challenging is practically an understatement. One needs to be physically fit to engage themselves in this type of work. It will require a lot of movement on the roofer’s part since they will be installing and replacing various materials in their clients’ homes or buildings. The work will be typically done outdoors and on high locations. This is why a roofer needs to ensure that they have the proper insurance coverage in place, in the event that they run into any occupational hazard or risk.

Before you start to sign up for a professional roofing company, make sure that you are able to research on the company that you wish to join. A reputable roofing services team should have all the proper licenses and certification to operate under dangerous working conditions. Aside from that, they should be able to provide you specific insurance and health or medical coverage in the event that you run into an accident while on the job. This does not only help protect you, it also helps protect your client and the entire business in the long run.

In a time of recession, unemployment and the credit crunch, some people may automatically assume that finding a job in these times may be extremely challenging. What they do not realize is that the roofing job opportunities are endless for someone who knows exactly where to look. There are several manual jobs available in the country today, and roofing jobs are just one of them. Before you try to dismiss this as just another type of maintenance job, you should know that entering this industry may be a lifelong career for you if you really consider it.

No home, building or establishment will ever be complete without roofing. It does not only protect the dwelling from weather elements and other forces of nature. It can also add and transform the look and feel of a building, depending on the kind of material used to build the roof. The roof has to be strong, sturdy, durable and exact. And this does not end there: proper maintenance also needs to be practiced to make sure that the roof is free of any repairs or leaks.

You can try to install a roof by yourself, but you should know that it is a dirty and hard labor job that needs to be done by a skilled professional. This is why you would need the assistance of roofers. Industrial roofing jobs are quite popular in the construction and real estate industry because it entails a lot of work. Since the roof is exposed to sun, wind, rain, snow and other harsh conditions, a homemaker or business owner cannot afford to have a leaking roof or one with substandard materials. A professional roofing company will help you choose the right materials for your home so that you can make sure that your house is protected from any external elements.

If you want to try getting into the roofing industry, you want to make sure that you read up on it first and do your necessary research. While it may take some time before you actually get to practice it and hire clients for roofing jobs, the results will be beneficial to you in the long run. You do not only find yourself a career that will help bring income. You can also help others build safe and protected homes for their family and loved ones.
